COMBING GLASS - $150.00 - includes all materials
Instructor: Dennis Brady
to be held at DeBrady-Victorian Studio Workshop in Victoria BC
This two evening class is part of a mixed“Triple Play” class with some participants doing Combing, some Screen Melts, and some Weaving.
You can choose to do one project in any one of the three techniques but also get a chance to observe and learn about the other glass art techniques.
includes all materials, use of all tools (we have all the toys), and kiln firings to complete your project.
Lean how to manipulate molten glass in an open kiln. All tools and materials are included as well as the use of a kiln specially set up for combing glass. You will have a choice of making 2 – 8” projects (either square or round) or a single 12” project (either square or round).
This is a 2 part class.
The 1st session will be a group class and will include a demonstration of combing as well as teach you:
How to prepare a mold or dam assembly to hold the glass components.
Different ways to arrange the glass ready to melt and be combed.
How different combing methods produce different effects
How to prepare a kiln for combing glass.
How different kinds of kilns can be used to comb glass.
Safety precautions for combing glass.
The 2nd session is a one-on-one personal experience with you combing your project.
Because the kiln takes about 4 hours to heat up enough to comb the glass, it will be started early enough to be ready for you to begin combing when you arrive. Combing takes some time. Only a small amount can be done each time the kiln is opened. After each opening, the kiln has to be allowed to heat up again before you can comb some more. Depending on the complexity of the project you plan, this can take as much as a dozen openings to complete.
This is NOT appropriate for beginners.
You will be expected to do all your own glass cutting and arrange it in the mold to be fired in the kiln.
